There are 4 basic diseases. Parasites, bacteria, fungus and viruses.  Fungus is rare and viruses are untreatable and relatively rare.  Therefore if your fish are sick and you have no idea what to treat your fish for, look at the charts and try to choose between parasites or bacteria, then treat accordingly.
